The Craziest Things Mark Twain Did
Mark Twain is perhaps the most famous among American writers. In his famous white suits, with the ever-present cigar, an inconspicuous white cloth-like hair, and a bushy mustache, the man was undeniably eccentric in appearance. And he was eccentric – maybe even bigger than the characters in his works.
HUCKLEBERRY FINN ALMOST WENT CRAZY AND DIED IN TROUBLE
Twain’s problems with money seriously burdened the writer. All this took him to a very dark place where he was struggling with depression. Evidence of his mental state can be seen in the notes for a new novel in which the famous Huckleberry Finn and his friend Tom Sawyer appear. The idea for this novel continues much later on the events of his last book with this likable and young character. In the new novel, Huck Finn is 60 years old and is completely insane.
Arriving “from who knows where,” Huck tries to find his old friends Tom and Becky in every face he sees, thinking that he is still a boy. The notes are not clear, but in the end, he finds Tom, who is also lonely. Tom seemed to wander the world, but just like Finn, he gained nothing. The story ends with all the good and beautiful things in the past and their common death.
Fortunately for these popular characters, nothing is ever born out of this Twain idea. Twain himself recovered and pulled himself out of his own darkness.
MARK TWAIN AS A PSYCHIC
Twain considered himself to have the power of clairvoyance. Still, he hesitated to call it farsightedness or clairvoyance and preferred to use an expression he coined himself – mental telegraphy. He came up with this idea after sending several letters, but on the same day and on the same topics he received a number of letters. He claimed that there was some kind of mental connection between him and the people he corresponded with. Sometimes, Twain would even claim to know the contents of the letters before opening them.
His mother also believed in his mental powers. As a child, one day he walked in his sleep and wrapped his sister’s blankets with his fingers, who was dying of yellow fever. Since his sister passed away a few days later, his mother believed that Twain had some kind of sixth sense. He also had a very disturbing prediction about his brother Henry. Twain claims to have had a dream in which he sees his brother lying in a coffin.
The dream also had an incredible number of strange details, including a suitcase, clothes, and a bouquet of white roses with one red in the center. Sometime later, Henry Clemens died in a boiler explosion accident on a steamer. At the funeral, Twain discovered that his dream was a reflection of reality. Henry wore his brother’s clothes. The coffins nearby were the color of unpainted pine, but Henry’s friends bought him a better one.
The bouquet was not there, but it entered the whole picture very quickly, as an old woman passed by Twain and placed it on his brother’s chest.
HE ALMOST DIED, PROBABLY TEN TIMES
From the day Twain was born, he practically played with death. He was born prematurely, and even his mother expected him to die as a baby. Fortunately for the world of literature, a baby born as Samuel Clemens survived. However, even after surviving his baby years, he remained bedridden until the fourth and was very ill until the seventh. Later, according to his autobiography, he nearly drowned nine times in the Mississippi River.
Although he did not know how to swim, he liked to play by the water. He would occasionally break into it and he was pulled out so many times by different people that in the end, he forgot who they were. But with this as well as the detail that he was burned in the sun while traveling by steamer, it is difficult to say whether this is true, purely because of the nature of writing Twain’s autobiography.
It is most likely that this is at least based on the truth, but it is also possible that it is completely true. The next time he almost died young, it was an epidemic of smallpox in his hometown. Twain said that he crawled into the bed of another boy who was ill in order to get infected. He almost died.
