He traveled to Mecca, but soon severed ties with the Nation of Islam, and upon his return to the United States, he rejected the idea that all white people were devils and founded his own organization called the Muslim Mosque. He then changed his name to Al-Hajj Malik Al-Shabaz.

He received death threats more and more often, and on February 15, 1965, his house where he lived with his wife Betty and four daughters was attacked. Six days later, on February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was killed while giving a speech in New York. He was killed by three men who turned out to be members of the Nation of Islam.

All three were convicted and imprisoned. Some sources claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which closely monitored Malcolm, is behind his murder. The funeral was held on February 27 of that year.
