Plato is a descendant of one of the Attic noble families, to which the Athenian legislator, poet, and one of the “seven sages” – Salon – belonged six generations ago.
According to his father’s family line, it was said that Plato’s distant ancestor was the legendary Attic king Codrus. Since the day of Plato’s birth coincided with the feast of the birth of Apollo of Delphi, a myth was created in later times that Apollo was the real father of Plato.
Plato was born in 428 AD, a year before Pericles’ death, and Socrates was just over forty at the time. He lived a long time: eighty-one years.
His ancient biographers say that Socrates was joined by a young man in his twenties, that he had written tragedies before and wanted to participate in a competition of tragic poets, but that, by attending a Socratic conversation for the first time, he burned his tragedies. After Socrates’ death, historiographers say, he joined Heraclitus’ follower Cratilus and listened to the presentations of one of Parmenides’ followers.
